OSHA UNVEILS ONLINE INJECTION MOLDING MACHINE SAFETY TRAINING COURSE FOR PLASTICS PROCESSORS

WASHINGTON (August 20, 2003) - The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) announced this week that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently added to its Web site a turnkey "train-the-trainer" injection molding safety course that can be accessed directly from the Web or downloaded as a Power Point presentation.

The online course, a product of a strategic alliance between SPI and OSHA aimed at providing information and guidance in reducing injuries and illnesses in the workplace, provides safety trainers with the tools they need to adequately instruct workers in the latest guidelines and safety measures for use in horizontal injection molding.

The comprehensive machine safety training course, which includes machine guarding and special lockout/tagout modules, also describes the types of injuries seen in the injection molding industry and discusses the possible causes of these injuries. The course outlines the ways that employees can protect themselves by recognizing the hazards in the job they are doing, understanding the requirements for guarding machines and implementing solutions for identified problems. To access the course online, link to the Web at http://www.osha.gov/dcsp/alliances/spi/imm_ppts.html. To view the other products and resources developed specifically for the plastics industry through the SPI/OSHA Alliance, link to the plastics industry page on OSHA's Web site at http://www.osha.gov/dcsp/alliances/spi/spi.html.
