SPI SEEKS PARTICIPATION FOR ITS FINANCIAL AND OPERATING RATIOS SURVEY

Data Helps Processors Manage Their Business

WASHINGTON (March 15, 2004) - The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) today announced it is seeking feedback from plastics processors for its annual Financial & Operating Ratios Survey. Now in its 42nd year, the survey is open for participation through April 16, 2004.

This important management tool takes the financial pulse of the plastics processing industry, with the confidential results presented as composite operating statements, balance sheets and statistical data.

SPI is actively seeking the participation of thousands of plastics processing companies in the United States. The more survey respondents there are, the more accurate and valuable the published results will be. Survey participants will learn their company's confidential ranking in more than 100 key business metrics, including:

  • Net Sales/All Employee Hours
  • Value Added per All Employee Hours
  • Total Employment Costs/Net Sales
  • Total Employment Cost per Lb. Shipped
  • Production Worker Employment Cost per Lb. Shipped
  • Total Production-Related Expense per Lb. Shipped
  • Value Added per Lb. Shipped
  • Productive Machine Hrs./Available Machine Hours
  • Inventory Turnover (times)
  • Asset Turnover (times)
  • Return on Equity
  • Return on Invested Capital
  • Percent Change in Net Sales

The survey also will provide benchmarking data, including percentage of on-time delivery, percentage of customer complaints for orders shipped, percentage of products made that did not meet customers' specifications and employee absenteeism.

"SPI is committed to collecting, analyzing and delivering the valuable information found in the Financial and Operating Ratios Survey," said Lori Anderson, SPI's Strategic Planning and Industry Relations Officer, "Providing U.S. plastics processors with this comprehensive knowledge of their industry allows them to make strategic business decisions with confidence, ultimately empowering them to be more competitive in the global market."

A list of survey participants, a copy of the original questionnaire and formulas for ratios are included in the survey. Surveys are provided at no cost to participating companies and may be purchased individually from SPI by non-participants for a fee.
