![]() FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Barry Eisenberg SPI 2006 ALLIANCE OF PLASTICS PROCESSORS AWARDS RECOGNIZE INNOVATION IN NEW PRODUCT DESIGN WASHINGTON (April 24, 2006) – A wide range of products showcasing the latest in design technology were honored April 2–4 at the New Product Design Competition, held in conjunction with the Alliance of Plastics Processors’ (APP) 2006 Plastics Parts Innovation Conference in Columbus, OH. Formerly the Structural Plastics Division, APP is a business unit of the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI). Taking top honors was Horizon Plastics Co. Ltd., whose children’s playhouse cottage roofing system took home the Conference Award, as well as the People’s Choice Award and the Retail and Consumer Products Category Award. The Judges Award went to the Bemis Contract Group for the Sub Compact Utility Tractor. The Bemis Contract group also won the 9th Annual Industrial Designers Society of America/Plastics News Award for the John Deere Series 8000 Engine Enclosure. Awards were also presented to technical papers that compliment the products on display in the design competition by reviewing the processes and the projects involved with bringing the products to fruition. All papers are reviewed by industry peers based on the following criteria: contribution to the industry; technical merit; novel/innovative; technical writing style; and effectiveness of presentation. Points are deducted for commercialism. The 2006 Best Paper Award was presented to Chul Park, University of Toronto, for “Investigations on Advanced Structural Foam Molding Using a Continuous Polymer/Gas Melt Flow Stream.” The recipient of the First Runner Up Award was Barry McGraw, Battelle Memorial Institute, for “Ultrasonic Joining of Dissimilar Polymeric Materials.” Award criteria: Category Awards: First place awards are presented to the most innovative commercial product entry in each market category. Conference Award: Presented to the most innovative entry in the New Product Design Recognition and enters the Structural Plastics Division Hall of Fame. People's Choice Award: Conference attendees vote for their choice of the most innovative entry. Judge's Award: Presented to the part that stands out among the entries, but does not win its category. 9th Annual IDSA/Plastics News Design Award: sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America and Plastics News and presented to a commercial product entry in recognition of the important work performed by industry designers and to highlight the fruits of teamwork between designers, toolmakers and manufacturers. Judges are selected by the IDSA.
