SIX COMPANIES MAKE SPI SOUTH'S HONOR ROLL FOR EXCELLENCE IN SAFETY

Washington, D.C. (October 18, 2006)—The Southern Region of The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) recognized six SPI member companies from the Southern region for their excellent safety records in 2005. The awards were presented at SPI's National Annual Meeting held at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City in Arlington, Va. The six companies qualified for the SPI's Southern Region Excellence in Safety program's highest award, the Roll of Honor, by reporting no OSHA recordable injuries or illnesses for the year 2005. Those companies included:

  • Fortron Industries near Wilmington, N.C.
  • Hilex Poly Co., LLC in Hartsville, S.C.
  • Milliken & Company's Cypress Plant in Blacksburg, S.C.
  • PolyOne Corporation in Plaquemine, La.
  • Techmer PM in Dalton, Ga.
  • Toray Fluorofibers in Decatur, Ala.

The SPI South Excellence in Safety awards also includes two "Most Improvement" categories for Total Recordable Injury Rate and Severity Rate/Lost Time Injuries. United Southern Industries of Forest City, N.C., had the most improvement in total recordable injury rate for a company with fewer than 100 employees. Precision Southeast in Myrtle Beach, S.C., received the same honor for a company with over 100 employees. Receiving recognition for the Most Improvement in Severity Rate/Lost Time Injuries for a company with less than 100 employees was Durden Enterprises of Auburn, GA. Precision Southeast and Jarden Plastic Solutions in Greer, S.C., were tied for that honor for companies with over 100 employees.

To be eligible for the SPI South Excellence in Safety awards, members from the Southern region must participate in SPI's Occupational Safety and Health Survey by submitting their OSHA 300 log posted in February to SPI. The survey has been conducted every year during the months of February and March by SPI since the 1970s to collect statistical information on occupational safety in the plastics industry and to recognize those work sites that have excellent safety records.

Nationally, 222 work sites reported their 2005 occupational injuries and illnesses in SPI's Occupational Safety and Health Survey. Of that, 166 work sites were recognized with safety awards. From the 2005 survey, 51 Distinguished Safety Awards, 34 Achievement Safety Awards, 35 Merit Safety Awards, and 46 Special Recognition Awards were issued.

All participating SPI member companies received a complimentary benchmarking report to help them evaluate their plants' safety records compared to the safety performance of other plastics companies in the same industry segment. The report, available only to participants, includes total recordable case incidence rates, days of restricted work activity or job transfer (DART) rates and severity rates for the plastics industry. Safety rates are broken down by process, such as extrusion, thermoforming or injection molding and by general category, such as processor, material supplier and machinery/auxiliary equipment.
