![]() RFID Whom to Contact: Lynne Harris What's New | Background | Glossary |Applications | Research | Standards* | Funding* | Additional Information* Members Only Standards The following is a partial list of organizations that have issued guidelines, publications or standards relating to RFID: AIM Global - The Association for Automatic Identification and Mobility American Trucking Associations Association of American Railroads: Standard S-918 Automotive Industry Action Group: Standard AIAG B-11 CEN - European Committee for Standardization International Electrotechnical Commission International Organization for Standardization North American Free Trade Agreement These standards focus on the protocol defining the air interface between tags and readers. They also define the structture of the data contained in, written to and read from the RFID tags. The carrier frequencies in which these standards are used are defined by the Radio Frequency Communication Agency of the local government. Funding As a rule, development costs and capital funding of RFID applications is provided by tag suppliers. Capital and execution costs vary. One very large retailer funds its own reader infrastrcture, but requires its suppliers to tag products at no charge. On the other hand, the Department of Defense expects to bear the cost of infrastructure and tags. Some of the standards organizations listed above charge membership fees to fund staff, while others depend on the companies who hire or retain subject matter experts to fund their involvement in standards development.
