SPI POLICY STATEMENT ON SUSTAINABILITY The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) and its member companies continue to embrace the concept of sustainability. SPI represents the third largest industry in the US economy that employs more than 1.1 million workers. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present while allowing future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is defined as a balance of (1) protecting the natural systems of the planet and (2) providing a high quality of life for all people, while (3) fostering global competition, economic freedom of choice, and growing prosperity for all. With this balanced approach, sustainability leads to an improved quality of life for both present and future generations.
