SPI Safety Statistics and Awards Program

The Society of the Plastics Industry's (SPI) Occupational Health and Environmental Issues Committee invites you to participate in the 2007 Safety Statistics and Awards Program.

SPI conducts an annual Occupational Safety and Health Survey to collect statistical information of occupational illnesses and injuries in the plastics industry and recognizes those work sites, which have excellent safety records, with the following awards:

Distinguished Safety Awards recognize member company work sites with no occupational injuries or illnesses, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), during the calendar year 2007.

Achievement Safety Awards are presented to work sites with no OSHA recordable occupational injuries or illnesses involving lost workdays or restricted work activity during the calendar year 2007.

Merit Safety Awards are presented to work sites having a 2007 OSHA days away from work, days of restricted work activity or job transfer (DART) rate lower than the national average for their industry and a reduction in their DART rate of at least 20 percent when compared to their previous 2006 rate.

Special Recognition Awards are presented to those work sites with safety performance for 2007 that is better than the national average for their Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code.

To participate in the program, please read the invitation letter, then complete the survey form, providing 2007 occupational illness and injury data for each branch site of your company. Please submit a separate form for each site, supplying its mailing address and the name and phone number of the individual preparing the form. The completed material should be returned to Susan R. Howe, The Society of the Plastics Industry, 1667 K Street, N.W., Suite 1000, Washington, DC 20006-1620 or fax (202) 296-7675.

The requested occupational illness and injury data is the annual summary of your OSHA 300 log, which you post in the workplace during the month of February. The hours/employees data is listed on the OSHA 300A form.

All data will be handled confidentially. Company names will be disclosed only as Safety Award recipients.

For additional information, contact Susan Howe, Vice President, Worker Health & Safety.
